Coca-Cola rallies to record a 14-13 win
in Joe Barry Memorial Cup

A determined MetalTek team roared onto the field in Joe Barry Memorial Cup action
at the International Polo Club, scoring the first two goals of the game before falling to
Coca-Cola in the final minute of play by the score of 14-13 Thursday afternoon.
Stevie Orthwein scored the first goal of the game three-and-one-half minutes into the
opening chukker followed by a goal from Carlucho Arellano for a 2-0 lead. Coca-Cola
team captain Gillian Johnston kept her team in the mix, scoring her first goal of the
game cutting the MetalTek lead to a single goal, 2-1, to close out the period.
Sebastian Merlos converted a penalty shot to put MetalTek up, 3-1 in the second period
but Coca-Cola’s Julio Arellano scored on two penalty shots to tie it at 3-3. Orthwein
and Will Johnston scored consecutive goals for MetalTek to regain the lead, 5-3. Sugar
Erskine fired back with a goal from the field for Coca-Cola to cut the lead to a single
goal, 5-4, and with thirty-seven seconds in the chukker Gillian Johnston tied it up at 5-5
with her second goal of the game.
Gillian Johnston blazed into the third chukker with two more goals for the Coca-Cola
team in under two minutes as it took a two goal, 7-5 lead. Carlucho Arellano got on the
scoreboard for MetalTek with a goal from the field, but Erskine scored a final goal to
give Coca-Cola an 8-6 edge to end the first half.
Mason Wroe converted a penalty shot to open the second half, extending the Coca-
Cola lead to three goals, 9-6. The balance of the chukker belonged to MetalTek as it
scored three consecutive goals. Orthwein scored two goals from the field followed by a
penalty conversion by Carlucho Arellano to knot it up at 9-9.
Julio Arellano scored on a penalty shot to open the fifth chukker for a 10-9 Coca-Cola
lead, but Merlos tied it up at 10-10 with his second goal of the day. Julio Arellano
closed out the chukker with another penalty conversion, and MetalTek found itself
trailing 11-10 going into the final chukker of play.
Orthwein tie it up at 11-11 on a brilliantly executed tail shot in sixth chukker action,
followed by a goal from Will Johnston for a 12-11 lead with four minutes left to play.
Carlucho Arellano extended the MetalTek lead to two goals, 13-11, but Coca-Cola
wasn’t ready to roll over. Three straight penalty conversion s from Julio Arellano ended
the game in a 14-13 Coca-Cola victory.
Julio Arellano led all scoring with seven goals. Gillian Johnston scored four times.
Erskine added a pair of goals and Wroe scored once in the win.
Orthwein led the MetalTek team with five goals. Carlucho Arellano scored four times
and Will Johnston and Merlos scored two goals apiece.
